OUR HISTORY

Honduras Medical Missions first came into existence during  a medical mission clinic in San Pedro Sula 17 years ago, when Dr. Joe Pinkerton, a physician from Wilkes County, NC, met Josue Andrade, his translator from United States.  Josue, who was serving as a missionary in Sonaguera, a rural town 6 hours east of San Pedro, said to Dr. Pinkerton, “we need you to come see us there.”

That meeting led to the forming of a relationship with the people of a western North Carolina and the people of Honduras. The relationship has matured and changed over the years. It has included work at a children’s home in San Pedro Sula, multiple trips to Sonaguera, and the surrounding areas, involving hundreds of volunteers and many hours. But most importantly, it has brought about hundreds of salvations and long lasting relationships with our friends in Honduras.

While the medical trips were evolving, we were aware of multiple trips made by work crews from our home community of Wilkes County who were building churches, parsonages, classrooms, and additions to the children’s home.  Again, this involved hundreds of North Carolinians and extensive resources for numerous projects.

Over the years, we tried to schedule our trips at different times to not be a burden on our friends in Honduras. About 10 years ago, and after discussions with Drs. Pinkerton and Roberson with Jimmy McGlamery (the leader of those construction teams), it was decided we could best utilize resources and effect change by traveling together.

The work has transitioned with changes in the USA, supporting churches, the
closure of the children’s home, COVID, and needs in Honduras. Coupled with this was a desire to most effectively provide evangelism, long-term health benefits, and support the local Hondurans..

Currently we are focusing on establishing clinics along with setting up potable clean water systems or wells where feasible. In other words, so the intestinal worms of our patients we treat today don’t come back tomorrow.Long-term goals include building a clinic in Honduras that we can staff along with Hondurans, drilling wells with the support to maintain them, and finally, a long-term dream is an online Hispanic Bibilcally sound seminary.

Support includes medical teams, construction teams and support for Honduran
ministers and their families. All work is volunteer and 100 % of gifts go to the work.
